Interlaced garden-wall designs with a planted balustrade
Ornamental lattice panels and urns for garden walls, with scattered braid motifs
The verso is dominated by decorative wall designs: a parapet or balustrade whose panels are filled with diagonal interlaced lattice and crowned by urns of foliage, surrounded by isolated studies of woven braid and basket-weave motifs. A note at the right labels these as ways of making garden walls, and a word at the upper margin simply reads 'wall'. A small architectural corner detail is sketched at the upper right. This mount joins two sheets, 988a verso and 988b verso.

A note at the right identifies the designs as modes of building garden or orchard walls. The principal drawing shows a low parapet with latticed panels and planted urns along its top.
Interlace and braid motifs
Around the parapet are scattered studies of interlaced bands: diagonal basket-weave lattice, plaited columns and chevron braids. They explore the decorative infill for the wall panels.

A single word at the upper margin labels the subject as a wall. It heads the group of wall and parapet studies.
