Studies of gears, a winch and a bored fluted element
Blue-tinted sheet with a hand-cranked winch, gear and ratchet mechanisms, and a note on an upper element
This blue-tinted sheet is crowded with mechanical sketches around a central block of mirror-script. At the top a fluted element hangs by a ring and hook from a horizontal bar, and the accompanying note gives its proportions at foot and top and the depth of its bore. Below at the left a hand-cranked winch turns a large wheel on a stand, while the right side carries several study of toothed wheels, ratchets and gear-trains. Only the note on the upper figure is transcribed; the further mirror-script and the individual mechanisms are not separately transcribed.

Upper element: proportions of foot, top and bore (d c a)
The note governs the upper figure lettered d c and a. It is to be only as thick at the foot as c d is at the top, or else half again thicker at the foot than the top for the two at the sides, with the middle one made equal, and its hole inside made twice as deep as it is wide at the mouth.
Hand-cranked winch with a large wheel
At the lower left a winch is mounted on a low stand: a crank handle turns a shaft carrying a large disc or wheel, with a hooked arm rising above it. It is drawn as a self-contained lifting or driving unit.
Toothed wheels, ratchets and gear-trains
The right side of the sheet gathers several small mechanisms built from toothed wheels, ratchet arms and framed gear-trains, sketched at different angles as variant studies of the same kind of geared assembly.
