The mathematical foundations of perspective and the two natures of visible bodies
A dense theoretical page opening with the claim that every case of perspective is understood through the five terms of the mathematicians: point, line, angle, surface, and body. Leonardo defines each in turn and then classifies visible bodies into those without a defining surface (thin or liquid things such as fog, smoke and water that blur into one another) and those bounded by a surface, which divide again into the transparent and the opaque. He ends by declaring that the opaque, from which infinite cases derive, is the one deserving lengthy treatment. The five terms of the mathematicians
Leonardo lays out the five terms by which every case of perspective is understood: point, line, angle, surface, and body. The point has no dimension and is indivisible with no location; the line has only length and is bounded by two points; the angle is where two lines meet at a point and may be right, acute or obtuse; the surface bounds a body and has no depth; the body has height, breadth, length and depth and is divisible in every direction.
The two natures of visible bodies: transparent and opaque
Visible bodies are of two kinds. The first lack a defining surface — thin or liquid things such as mud in water, fog or smoke in air, whose boundaries become confused and imperceptible as they mix with neighbouring bodies. The second have a bounding surface, and these divide again into the transparent, like glass, crystal and water, and the opaque, from which infinite cases derive.
