Caged Screw, Caged Cone and a Cranked Lifting-Shaft
A crankshaft raises and lowers rods carrying vessels; figures 41 and 42
Three machine sketches share the leaf, figures 41 and 42: a caged Archimedean screw and a caged cone, and below them a crankshaft whose elbow-cranks raise and lower rods fitted with vessels. No connected prose accompanies the drawings, only the figure numbers. They continue Leonardo's series of water-lifting mechanisms.

Cranked shaft raising and lowering vessel-rods
A rotating shaft set with elbow-cranks lifts and lowers a set of rods, each carrying a vessel, so as to raise water. It is one more of the lifting devices worked out across these pages.
Caged Archimedean screw and caged cone
The upper half of the leaf shows a caged Archimedean screw (fig. 41) and a caged cone (fig. 42). These gridded forms recur across the folios as housings for the screw-pumps.
