Squares inscribed obliquely within squares
A general rule shown by seven tilted squares and their numbered areas
The page is filled with a series of squares, each containing a second square set obliquely (corner to mid-side) inside it, illustrating what Leonardo heads a 'general rule'. The figures are annotated with numbers along their edges and in their centres (such as 4, 16, 8, 32, 16 and 36) that track the relation between an outer square and the tilted square within it. As Leonardo notes, the seventh figure is left without numbers.

Oblique squares set inside horizontal-based squares
Seven squares each enclose a tilted square whose corners touch the mid-points of the outer sides, drawn to demonstrate a general rule about a square inscribed in a square. The last of the seven is drawn without any accompanying numbers.
Numbered edges and central areas
The edges and centres of the figures carry numbers (for example 4, 16, 8, 32 and 36) that express the proportion between the outer square and the oblique square it contains.
