Intermittent-motion gear with a stepping wheel
A cylindrical pinion drives a large toothed wheel whose central cog wheel advances step by step
Drawn in red chalk and partly reinforced in pen, the sheet shows a cylindrical pinion (lantern gear) engaging a large disc rimmed with teeth; at the disc's hub a smaller wheel notched with cogs is set to advance intermittently, step by step, turned by a crank at the right. A separate detail below re-examines part of the same assembly. The e-Leo caption identifies the action as intermittent 'a scatti' motion, and a folio number is inscribed at the lower left.

Cylindrical pinion driving a toothed wheel with a stepping hub
A large disc rimmed with teeth is driven by a cylindrical pinion carried on a cranked shaft at the right. At the centre of the disc a smaller cog-notched wheel is arranged to advance intermittently rather than continuously, producing a step-by-step motion.
Detail study of the same mechanism
Beneath the main wheel a smaller sketch isolates part of the assembly, showing a framed block with rods and a point marked with the letter c. It re-examines how the moving parts engage.
