The upper drawing shows a braced timber excavating machine fitted with a double pulley for hoisting the dug-out material clear of the trench. The note below proposes that a group of gentlemen finance the undertaking, being left to enjoy the income from the waters, the mills and the passage of boats. Once their outlay has been repaid, they would hand back the Martesana canal.

Double-pulley hoist on a timber excavating frame
A braced timber frame carries a horizontal beam and a double-pulley arrangement used to raise the excavated earth. The diagonal member stiffens the structure so it can bear the lifted load. The lower supports splay outward to steady the machine on the ground.
Financing the canal for its revenues
The note proposes that many gentlemen share the expense of the works among themselves. In return they would enjoy the income from the waters, the mills and the passage of vessels. When their price has been repaid, they would give back the Martesana canal.
