Joinery for locking wood in its socket and tightening a drawing compass
Folio 62r sets out joinery for machine and instrument parts: a wedge (conio) driven into a mortise along the grain so a foot can be re-tightened by a blow without splitting, and the pivot (polo) of a drawing compass (sesto) made in two pieces, dried and boiled in wax or oil so damp cannot swell it. Leonardo insists the planes a b must not meet when the compass is closed, so that wear can always be taken up with a small tap. Paired drawings show the male-and-female square joints that keep the pivot from turning on itself, and a mallet and a shaft driven into a block illustrate the driving of the wedge. A faint column-like drawing shows through at the left margin.

Two-piece pivot (polo) for a drawing compass
The pivot of the compass is dried and boiled in wax so damp cannot swell it nor dryness shrink it. Made in two pieces with square male and female parts, each half turns with its own arm, so the pivot behaves as one piece while turning. The planes a b must not touch when the compass is closed, so wear can be taken up with a small blow.
Wedge locked in wood so it cannot be withdrawn
One piece of wood is fitted into another so it can never be pulled out of its hole, as in setting the leg into a little stool. The wood opened by the wedge must split along the grain of the piece that receives it, so the socket neither grows nor shrinks and never splits.
Mallet and wedge driven into a block
A mallet at the top and a shaft driven into a block below it show how the foot is driven inward by percussion. Because the foot never reaches the bottom of its hollow, it can always be driven back in to tighten the joint.
