A square pivot for the bobbin; reckoning 300 twists over three thirds of a braccio of thread
A carefully shaded drawing shows a large wheel and flyer spinning apparatus mounted on a wooden frame. Leonardo specifies that the male-and-female pivot through which the bobbin moves back and forth must be square so the whole assembly turns together with the spinning-wheel. Notes describe how the thread a n, drawn from its bobbin, is bent, and a long passage reckons the twist: holding the thread's head and giving three turns of the wheel imparts a hundred twists per third of a braccio, so a thread three thirds long gains 300 twists.

Square pivot so the bobbin turns with the flyer
The male-and-female fitting through which the bobbin travels back and forth must be square. Only then can the whole assembly rotate as one together with the spinning-wheel; otherwise it will not run well.
Bending the thread a n from its bobbin
Just as the thread a n is here bent after leaving its bobbin, so one may bend the cord of the spinning-wheel. The line of the carriage's spindle can then be sent along the line of the thread a n.
Reckoning 300 twists in the thread a n
The thread must already be well twisted as it first gathers onto the bobbin, or it will forever keep a poor twist. Holding the head a and giving three turns of the wheel imparts a hundred twists per third of a braccio, so a thread three thirds long gains 300 twists; more or less twist can be set by adjusting the span a n.
