The Common Parts of a Fortress: Members One Through Sixteen
Well and conduits, mill, oven, relief-ways, scarped walls, ravelins, ditches and round towers
A prose page (folio 94v) opening the systematic treatment of what Leonardo calls the 'common parts' of fortresses and enumerating their members one by one. The list runs from the well or cistern set in the keep, the mill and hand-mills for bombard powder, and the oven, through secure relief-ways, a dominating castellan's tower, scarped walls, flanking towers, the gate's ravelin, wide oblique ditches, covered reversed entrances, and weakly-built inner dwellings. It closes with the rule that towers should be round to shed impacts while walls stay angular, and breaks off at the sixteenth member. The sheet is entirely text with no drawing.

The well, mill and oven as the first three members
The first member is a well or cistern in the keep, with conduits reaching the soldiers' rooms, so the castellan may take it from others and none from him. The second is the mill and hand-mills for the powder for bombards. The third is the oven with all needed for baking bread.
Scarped walls, flanking towers and the gate's ravelin
The circuit walls should be high in themselves but set low, scarped for two-thirds of their height with machicolations among the corbels. Towers are attached to the walls or joined by angled wings, giving flanking fire. Before the gate stands a ravelin shaped to strike without being struck, shielding the entrance of the keep.
Wide oblique ditches and expendable inner dwellings
The ditches should be wide and deep, with high banks toward their bottom, and on the outside kept oblique and without hollows so soldiers cannot shield themselves against the fortress. The household's dwellings within the circuit should be built weakly, in a place easily ruined from the principal tower.
Why the towers are round and the walls angular
Towers should be round because a round form resists more and receives every impact less. The walls should be angular and never round, since the curvature of round walls would uncover little to the flanking fire of the towers. To make round walls defensible one would have to set the towers close together, at great expense and little use.
