Squaring the circle by 196 sectors
Leonardo's proof set against Archimedes' 3 1/7
Leonardo divides a circle's circumference into 196 equal portions with their triangular sectors and argues that the rectilinear wedge a b c is equal to the whole circle. He fixes the diameter at 14 so that 14 times 14 is 196, using the rule that circles are to one another as the squares of their diameters, and claims this squares the circle more exactly than Archimedes' rule of multiplying the diameter by 3 and 1/7. The rectilinear wedge a b c equal to the circle
The triangle made of two straight lines and a third curved one is taken as equal to the whole circle, the curvature lacking in the triangle matching the piece of circle it occupies. Superimposing the triangle on the semicircle and removing what they share leaves a squared remainder equal to the remainder of the circle.
Circles as the squares of their diameters
Circle is to circle as the square of one diameter to the square of the other, each multiplied by itself. Giving the greater diameter the value 14 makes 14 times 14 equal 196, while the lesser diameter is 1, so the great circle holds 196 sectors each equal to the small circle.
