Costing the removal of a cylindrical mass of rock
Bulk reckoned at 3000 canne; dragging and breaking priced at 214 2/7 ducats
The transcribed note reckons the bulk of a cylindrical body of stone — 30 canne in diameter, 100 in circumference and 4 canne high — as 3000 canne, obtained by multiplying half the circumference by half the diameter (750) and then by the height. From this it subtracts a wedge equal to one third of the body (about 1000 canne) and prices the dragging and breaking-up of the remaining stone at 30 soldi the canna, i.e. 1500 lire or 214 2/7 ducats, leaving the hump that runs along the shore. Figures such as 20, 10, 17 1/3 and 12 2/3 are jotted around the diagram. The upper half of the sheet carries faint red-chalk profiles of hilly terrain crossed by straight sighting lines and a small solid figure, and further light untranscribed notes appear at the lower left.
