A small inset diagram at the upper right shows the core (masschio) above and the matrix (femmina) below, with the markers m n set between them; a large, very faint study fills the rest of the sheet. The note explains that m n are made of the same metal that the horse will afterwards be cast in and are fixed into the core, their function being to keep the mould-cover (cappa) from approaching the core more than it should — preserving the intended thickness of the bronze. Distance-pieces m n between core and mould
The markers m n, of the same metal as the future horse, are fixed into the core (masschio); their office is that the mould-cover (cappa) should not come closer to the core than it ought, thereby fixing the gap that the molten bronze will fill.
