Covering a candle enlarges the pupil; the owl's pupil is 40 times man's, yet man sees 40 times better
Leonardo gives a hands-on demonstration: fixing the eye on a bright star while covering and uncovering a candle flame makes the star seem to swell and shrink, because covering the light widens the pupil and uncovering it narrows the pupil, and every image shrinks with the pupil. He notes that all pupils enlarge with the brightness of day and that nocturnal animals are given very large pupils, so that great darkness appears to them brightly lit while daylight forces them into dark retreats. He adds that the owl's night pupil is more than forty times man's, yet man's perceptive power (inprensiva) is more than forty times the owl's. Candle-and-hand demonstration: the star seems to swell and shrink
Fixing the eye on a large star and alternately covering and uncovering a candle's flame makes the star appear to grow (when the light is covered and the pupil widens) and to diminish (when the light is uncovered and the pupil narrows). Every image seen by the pupil shrinks together with the pupil.
Pupils track daylight; nocturnal animals have large pupils
All pupils grow with the increasing brightness of day and shrink as it wanes. Nocturnal animals have very large pupils, so that daylight drives them into dark places while at night great darkness appears to them strongly illuminated.
The owl's pupil versus man's perceptive power
The owl's night pupil is reckoned more than forty times that of man. Yet when the perceptive power (inprensiva) of each is compared, man's is found to be more than forty times the owl's.
A large pupil with weak perception magnifies objects fourfold
A small perceptive power with a large pupil renders equal objects four times larger than a double perceptive power with a small pupil. Unequal perceptive powers in equal pupils render equal objects greatly unequal.
