This art figures transparent things, while the sculptor will show you the natural ones without his artifice; the painter will show you various distances with the variation of the colour of the air interposed between the objects and the eye; he shows the mists, through which the species of the objects penetrate with difficulty; the rains, which show behind them the clouds with mountains and valleys; the dust, which shows within and behind itself the combatants who stir it; the rivers, more or less dense; this art will show you the fishes sporting between the surface of the water and its bottom; the polished pebbles of various colours resting upon the washed sands of the riverbed, surrounded by the verdant grasses within the surface of the water; the stars at diverse heights above us, and thus other innumerable effects to which sculpture does not attain.
