Compass constructions of an equilateral triangle, a right-angled quadrangle, and a regular pentagon
Leonardo lays out three regular-figure constructions over a given line. He builds an equilateral triangle a b c from two intersecting circles of the segment's own radius, then a square by extending the same construction to fix the right-angle vertex d. Finally he inscribes a regular pentagon on side m n, finding the center a of its circumscribing circle by bisecting side c n and swinging the compass so that the circle contains five equal chords.

Equilateral triangle over line a b
With the compass point set at a he draws circle c b, then at b draws a c; where the two circles meet at c lies the third angle of the equilateral triangle on a b.
Square (right-angled quadrangle) over line a e
Starting from equilateral triangle a c e, circle a c is carried beyond the intersection c by about half of a c and set at c d, so that the right angle falls at d, giving a quadrangle with four right angles.
Regular pentagon on line m n
Over line m n an equilateral triangle m c n is made; the midpoint b of face c n is joined by a line from angle m, and where its extension b meets line c r at point a the compass is fixed. A circle drawn from a through the ends of m n contains five equal chords, the sides of the pentagon.
