E tieni sempre in bocca la canna dell'aria che va nel vestito, e quando per una volta o 2 ti bisognassi torre dell'aria comune e la sc[h]iuma t'impedissi, tira per bocca di quella del vestito.

Fin fitted over a hand:

A glove with webbing for swimming in the sea.

Swimmer with a life-preserver

A way of saving oneself in a storm and shipwreck at sea. One must have a garment of leather that has the lips of the chest doubled by the space of a finger, and likewise be double from the waist to the knee; and let it be of leather secure against leaking air. And when you need to leap into the sea, blow up through the chest lips the skirts of your garment, and jump into the sea, and let yourself be guided by the waves when you see no nearby shore nor have knowledge of the sea. And always keep in your mouth the air-tube that goes into the garment, and when once or twice you need to take some common air and the foam prevents you, draw through the mouthpiece of the garment's tube.

Webbed swimming glove and a leather survival suit

A glove with membranes for swimming, and a leather garment with a breathing tube for surviving shipwreck

Machines & Devices

Two survival devices for the sea are set out on the sheet. At the top a hand wears a glove fitted with membranes or webs to help in swimming. Below, a swimmer is shown with a floatation device, and the note describes an air-proof leather garment whose chest and lower body are doubled and can be inflated through the chest before jumping into the sea, letting the wearer drift on the waves. A tube kept in the mouth supplies air from the garment when foam prevents breathing the open air.

Webbed glove for swimming

A glove furnished with membranes or webs (pannicoli) to aid swimming in the sea, shown fitted over a hand at the top of the sheet.

Inflatable leather survival suit with breathing tube

A garment of air-tight leather with the chest lips doubled by a finger's width and doubled again from waist to knee. Before jumping into the sea one inflates the garment's skirts through the chest and drifts on the waves. A tube kept in the mouth draws air from the garment when foam blocks ordinary breathing.
