A large plant study with a compass pentagon and a technique for soldering lead sheets over a roof
A large, carefully shaded study of a tuft of flowering plants dominates the sheet. At the upper left a compass construction raises a pentagon from an equilateral triangle, dividing the perpendicular into five parts and striking a circle that takes the given line five times. At the foot of the page, tools for soldering lead (a wooden mallet, iron edging-bars marked m n and a bottomless brazier) accompany a detailed method for soldering a bed of lead sheets over the finished vault of a building.

Study of a flowering plant

Pentagon from an equilateral triangle
On the given line a b an equilateral triangle a d b is raised; a line dropped from the apex through the base midpoint is divided into 5 parts. Compass point set on the fourth part at e strikes a circle touching the line's ends, into which a b then fits exactly five times.
Irons and mallet for soldering lead
Two iron edging-bars marked m n are drawn with a wooden mallet and a brazier. Two of the irons are wanted so that while one lets its lead cool the brazier can be drawn to the other, losing no time; the bars have four cutting edges as high as half a knife's back.
Soldering a lead bed over a roof
Over the last vault of a building a level bed of bricks is laid; the m n iron is set under the joints of thin lead plates, which are beaten with the wooden mallet so the cutting edges bite in. A bottomless brazier of burning coals melts the joints together, and the whole is covered with lime, linseed oil and pounded brick, given a finger's slope at the sides.
