Colours fade with distance except where sunlight strikes
The eye's view of shadowed bodies; a round body's mixed circular shadow
The folio states that the variety of the colours of bodies cannot be told at long distance except in the parts struck by solar rays. A figure of an eye scrutinizing bodies partly veiled in shadow shows that a derivative shadow, cast by a spherical opaque-and-luminous body and broken across bodies at various distances, appears round to an eye set in front near the centre of the original shadow. A further figure of two small opaque bodies opposed to the sun shows a spherical body casting a circular mixed shadow when a second body of its own kind is interposed between it and the sun.

The variety of the colours of bodies cannot be made out at long distance, except in those parts that the solar rays strike. Elsewhere distance dissolves their distinctions.
Why a broken shadow looks round to the eye
The projection of a derivative shadow, cast by a spherical opaque-and-luminous body and broken as it falls on bodies set at different distances, appears round to an eye placed in front, near the centre of the original shadow. The figure shows the eye scrutinizing bodies partly covered in shadow.

A spherical opaque body casts a circular mixed shadow when a second opaque body of its own kind is interposed between it and the sun. Two small opaque bodies are set opposite the sun to demonstrate it.
