The Eye: How Images Enter and Bend Within the Eye
Where images settle, spectacle lenses, and why the eye sees larger than perspective predicts
This densely diagrammed page asks whether an object's image occupies a fixed location on the eye and whether the image keeps the object's proportions. Using the example of spectacle lenses, Leonardo argues that the species (images) settle on a transparent surface and there regenerate a fresh concourse toward the eye, and he claims the rays bend on entering, so the eye sees an object larger than the painters' linear perspective would predict. A marginal note gives an experiment: open the eye wide so the pupil no longer sees the lids, and luminous points appear without rays. Spectacle lenses and where images settle
The lenses of spectacles show that the images of objects settle on the surface of the glass and from there bend toward the eye, that surface being a common boundary between air and the albugineous humour. Because old people's spectacles make things look much larger than reality, Leonardo concludes that the concourse of species is cut at the transparent surface and regenerated as a new concourse carrying the images to the eye.
Why the eye sees larger than perspective predicts
The straightness of the rays bends on entering the eye, so that at equal distance the eye sees an object larger than the painters' rules give. Lights without rays: a marginal experiment
The rays seen around luminous bodies are caused by the image of those bodies impressed in the thickness of the eyelids, which reflect into the pupil. Open the eye so wide that the pupil does not see the lids, and the lights will be seen without rays.
