The Human Eye: Vision Fills the Whole Pupil, Not a Point
Needle and horsehair-sieve experiments refute the idea that sight is reduced to a point
Against an adversary who holds that the eye's visual power is reduced to a single point, Leonardo argues that the power is spread whole throughout the entire pupil, so that a small object set close before the eye hides nothing behind it. He offers two experiments: a sewing needle held close to the pupil does not block the view of objects behind it, and the mesh of a sieve of thick horse-hairs held before the eye hides nothing, hiding the less the nearer it comes. Vision fills the whole pupil, not a point
The pupil has visual power whole throughout and whole in every part, so a thing set before the eye smaller than the pupil hides no remote object and acts like a transparent thing. Against the adversary's claim that the power is reduced to a point, Leonardo notes that the eye's convexity must be equidistant from that point, and undertakes both experiment and demonstration of necessity.
The sewing-needle experiment
Set the thickness of a medium sewing needle before the pupil, as near as possible, and no object placed behind the needle at some distance is hidden from view. If vision were a point, every smallest near object would blot out a great part of the sky; a body half the pupil's diameter would hide almost half the sky.
The horsehair-sieve experiment
The mesh of a sieve made of thick horse-hairs held before the eyes hides nothing behind it, and hides the less the nearer it comes to the eye. Were the visual power in a point, the nearer the hairs approached the wider the space they would hide; the contrary result proves the power is infused throughout the whole pupil, which sees beyond the thickness of the hairs.
Why the pupil grows at night
In a marginal figure against the adversary, Leonardo asks why the pupil grows at night if the whole pupil does not see. He answers that it grows to see things larger, and so better, rather than to see many things, since it judges only one at a time.
