Measuring a river's width by triangulation
A field method using perpendiculars and the congruent quadrilateral c f e g
Leonardo gives a practical surveying method for measuring the width of a river without crossing it. Standing back somewhat more than the river's width, one sights a known mark b on the far bank, erects a perpendicular c d, sights b again from d to fix a mark f on the near bank, then bisects c d at e and drops further perpendiculars to build the quadrilateral c f e g. Because e bisects c d and f bisects c b, the side c f equals f b, so subtracting the near-bank segment leaves h c equal to the river's width. Sight a known mark b across the river, raise the perpendicular c d, sight b from d to set mark f on the bank, bisect c d at e, and drop further perpendiculars to form c f e g. Since e is the midpoint of c d and f the midpoint of c b, side c f equals f b, and h c remains equal to the river's width.
