Whether equal powers yield equal motion; muscles against counterweight engines
Leonardo asks whether equal powers of percussion, exerted over equal lengths of motion in different times, drive their movables equally far, and answers with a proposition that the mover which separates from its movable soonest drives it farthest. He distinguishes two kinds of mover: the sentient one, which moves by the extension and contraction of muscles, and the insentient machine such as ballistae and mangonels driven by counterweights, cords, or bent wood. In the margins he treats a bird spreading and lowering its tail to bend its course onto a high perch, and a kite descending eastward that lowers the right horn of its tail so a north wind does not sweep it southeast. Marginal sketches show a bird settling on a column and a kite gliding.

Among movers of equal power and motion joined to their movables, the one that separates from its movable soonest drives it farthest. A bird carried by its impetus higher than the place where it wishes to land spreads and lowers its tail; striking the air with it, it bends its straight course into a curve and ends above the landing place.

The kite a b c d descending eastward along the straight line n m is struck crosswise by a north wind along f n, which would bend it southeast. Lowering the right horn of its tail to catch the wind behind the center of gravity keeps its straight motion from bending.
