On compound impetus and the three kinds of friction
Simple, compound and decompound motion of bodies, and friction of dragged weights and wedges
Under the heading "On compound impetus" Leonardo distinguishes simple motion, compound motion (which shares the impetus of both mover and moving body), and decompound impetus, in which two natures come from the mover and a third from the shape of the mobile as it turns its convexity to the plane. A spiral traversed by truncated cones and a hemisphere figure illustrate the argument. A second section, "Friction," divides friction into three parts: simple (a body dragged over its place), compound (a body between two immobile bodies), and decompound (a wedge acting on its several sides), illustrated by dragged weights on pulleys and a driven wedge.

Compound and decompound impetus
Compound motion participates in the impetus of both the mover and the moving body, standing midway between two simple motions, one at the beginning and one at the end. Decompound impetus carries three natures: the straight motion of the mover, the curved motion of the mobile, and the mobile's own simple motion as it turns the middle of its convexity to the plane on which it rests.
Simple, compound and decompound friction
Friction divides into three parts. Simple friction is that which a moving body makes upon the place where it is dragged; compound friction is that made by a body between two immobile bodies; decompound friction is that which a wedge makes on its different sides.
