How an eddy divides a current and sorts the bed
Water passing through canal h d n strikes at g and divides: one part turns back and circles along g f e, while along e b g it continues its motion but is full of minute eddies that penetrate to the bottom, generated where the water g f e meets the current from d n. On the bottom, g f e keeps nothing (the greater eddy's current runs there); e b g keeps little and light; mound a gathers the lightest things where motion is slowest; mound c gathers heavier things, built by the canal current slowed at the encounter.
Why deposits form in the hollows of an eddy
Deposits form in hollows because the water is slower in the middle of the eddies than at the sides, and where it is slower it leaves behind the more light material.
