Sunlight Through Water Bubbles; Objects Smaller Than the Pupil
A cross-shaped image cast on the water's floor, and why tiny objects hide no part of the view
A sun ray passing through the bubbles on the water's surface casts on the bottom an image of the bubble shaped like a cross; Leonardo notes he has not yet found the cause but suspects smaller bubbles clustered around the larger one. Below, two figures of larger and smaller bubbles introduce a rule of vision: an object interposed between the field of view and the eye, if smaller than the pupil, occupies no part of the field. Two further eye diagrams, lettered e n o p, r q, a b c d and a b s, demonstrate that so small an object hides nothing, or, brought to the pupil, blots out the whole field.

The sun's ray, having passed through the bubbles of the water's surface, casts on the bottom of the water an image of the bubble shaped like a cross. Leonardo says he has not yet investigated the cause but judges it due to other small bubbles joined around the larger one.
An object smaller than the pupil hides no part of the field
If an object interposed between the field of view and the eye is smaller than the pupil, no part of the field is occupied by it. In the diagram let e p be the light of the eye and q the interposed image between the field a d and the eye; such an object occupies no part of the field, though brought to the pupil at a it would blot out the whole field.
