A branch's core aligns with the plant's core; a template-guided level
In red chalk the leaf opens 'On ramification,' with the principle that the central line of a branch's thickness always aligns with the central line of the plant. A pen note beside a drawn A-frame describes an instrument with a plumb line, sighted from two directions against the centre of its poles, used to true a floor little by little beneath a moving template (sagoma), after which the whole is corrected minutely. A small sun with rays is sketched in red at the upper right. Parts of the pen note are transcribed with uncertain words.

A branch grows on the axis of the plant
The beginning of a branch always has the central line of its thickness directed toward the central line of the plant. The branch springs so that its core continues the trunk's core.

The plumb-line and its bob are sighted from two directions against the centre of the poles a c. The plane is worked little by little beneath the moving template, and once the pavement is finished the whole is corrected minutely with the template, which must be used with the utmost diligence.
