On Trees: How Foliage Rounds Off at a Distance

In a note headed 'On trees', Leonardo studies how the outlines of a tree's branching read against illuminated air, becoming ever more spherical with distance. A drawn row of eleven trees labelled a, b, c shows the true ramification near the eye (a), its diminution at b, and its total loss at c, where the whole plant is barely recognized. He generalizes that any shadowy body loses its angles at a distance and appears round, illustrated by a small diagram of a square reduced through an octagon almost to a circle. Tree outlines round toward a sphere and vanish with distance (a, b, c)
The branching of a tree seen against illuminated air keeps its true figure only near the eye, at a. By b it is nearly diminished, and at c it is wholly lost, so that not even the branches but scarcely the whole plant can be made out. The nearer the tree, the more its outline departs from that sphericity.
A square reduced through an octagon almost to a circle
Any shadowy body, whatever its figure, appears spherical at a long distance, because its angles are lost first and then the shorter sides. A small diagram shows a square whose corners drop away to make an octagon and finally an almost perfect circle.
