Canal Profile: Rebounds, Dragged Air, and the Falling Surface
Water carries the neighbouring air and reshapes itself over a drop
A canal-profile study in red chalk, its wavy bed line drawn across the middle of the sheet. Leonardo notes the rebounds the water makes, observes that in its motion the water drags along the air bordering it, and marks that the bed offers more resistance (numbered 41). A second note adds that the whole upper part of the water at the start of its fall ends up lower than the rest once the fall is past.
