The leaf (inverted) is filled with clusters of looped knots and feathery, palmette-like foliate sprays drawn in red chalk. Above them Leonardo writes a short physical note that a body which has more of its bulk in the air than in the water will be carried along by the movement of the air. Looped knots and foliate palmette sprays
Several clusters of interlaced looped knots joined to feathery, palmette-like leaf sprays are sketched freely in red chalk down the centre of the leaf. They read as decorative motif studies rather than a mechanical drawing.
A body drifts with whichever fluid holds more of it
That body which has of itself a greater portion in the air than in the water will move with the course of the air. The note concerns which fluid carries a partly-submerged object.
