In pen at the top are three stacked tiers or planks inscribed 'capo di chiodi' (heads of nails), with a further tier drawn just below. In red chalk a rod is shown suspended from two cords and carrying a graduated scale, annotated with fractions (7/9, 2/9) that mark positions along its length. A column of figures (32, 8, 16, 8, 128, 32, 4, 128) accompanies the study.

Rod suspended from two cords
A rod hangs from two cords and bears a graduated scale of tick marks. The figures 12, 7/9 and 2/9 note divisions along it, apparently a study of how the beam balances when supported at two points.
Column of figures
A vertical column of numbers runs down the right side: 32, 8, 16, 8, 128, 32, 4 and 128. The repeated values suggest a chain of calculation tied to the divisions of the suspended rod.
