Lantern gear and spoked wheel
The lower figure is a lantern pinion, its cage of vertical rods running between two round discs so that it can mesh with a toothed wheel. The upper drum carries a wheel whose crossed spokes meet at a central hub.
Hydraulic wheel
The e-Leo catalogue reads the upper drum-and-wheel assembly as a hydraulic wheel, of the kind driven by or lifting water. It is paired with the lantern gear that would transmit its motion.
