Leonardo describes how rising floodwater first scrapes up the lightest material and drops it where the current slackens, then lifts heavier matter such as sand and lays it over the earlier deposits, always carrying heavier things a shorter distance. He then turns to restoring soil to hillsides and slopes laid bare by the water: one should lead rain or other water in fast channels so they grow turbid with earth, then split them into many furrow-like branches where the current slows and drops its load. The passage treats both the physics of sediment transport and its practical use for reclaiming scoured ground.

How currents sort light and heavy sediment
Weak floodwater lifts the lightest material and deposits it where the flow weakens; as it grows it carries heavier matter such as sand over the earlier deposits. Heavier things are set down nearer where they were taken, lighter things carried farther on.
Restoring soil to bare slopes with turbid channels
To return soil to hills and slopes scoured bare, Leonardo directs leading rain or other water through fast channels so they become laden with earth. Where the load should settle, the channels are divided into many small furrow-like branches so their fury slackens and the water clears.
Ground stripped and rebuilt by running water
The passage treats slopes and hillsides laid bare and scoured by watercourses, and the redeposition of earth carried by turbid water. It reads the wearing-down and rebuilding of terrain as a natural process the engineer can direct.
