Ripples in Still Water Versus a Moving River
With red-chalk sketches of a chain of links and gear-trains
The pen note at the foot of the sheet states that a stone dropped in still water makes circles equidistant from their center, but in a moving river the circles form a long, nearly oval figure and drift downstream with their center, following the current. Several groups of such ripples are drawn above the text. In red chalk, struck through, are earlier, unrelated sketches: a chain of rectangular modules with a cup, and forms that appear to be gear-trains.

Concentric ripples in still versus flowing water
If a stone is thrown into still water, its circles are equidistant from their center; but if the river moves, the circles form a long, almost oval figure and move away together with their center from the very place where they were created, following the course of the water. Several groups of ripples illustrate the point.
