He then states that water running over an equal river width and equal bottom takes on as many thicknesses as there are obliquities of the bed, and that the faster it runs in one place, the proportionately thinner it becomes.

Continuing on the intersection of currents, Leonardo states that the stream of the middle is always swifter than the one that rebounds. The faint crossing lines drawn on the sheet mark where currents intersect. Speed is thus distributed across the channel rather than uniform.
Water thickness varies with the obliquity of the bed
Water moving through an equal width of river and over an equal bottom takes on as many varied thicknesses as there are varied obliquities of the bed over which it runs. The faster it flows in one place than another, the proportionately thinner it becomes. Speed and depth of the sheet are thus inversely linked.
