Ornamental shell, cartouche and honeycomb studies
With a transcribed note on wheel, pinion and the worm screw
The sheet is filled with pen-and-ink ornamental studies: scalloped shell and cartouche forms, a tightly coiled spiral shell, a small block of honeycomb hexagons, and several heraldic leaf- and shield-shaped devices, one ribbed like an escutcheon. No primary text is inked among the drawings, only faint show-through from the other side of the leaf. The transcription supplied for this folio, however, is a note on mechanical advantage, contrasting a wheel that drives its pinion with the worm (endless) screw, which can turn a wheel but can never be turned by it.

Wheel, pinion and the worm screw compared
The supplied note observes that when a wheel turns its pinion as easily as the pinion turns the wheel, the driving force gains no advantage. The greater the disparity, the greater the advantage — greatest when the driver cannot be back-driven, as with the endless (worm) screw that turns a wheel while the wheel can never turn the screw.
