Composite motion can be infinitely faster or slower than its mover
A passage in red chalk distinguishes two kinds of motion, simple and composite. A simple motion can be neither slower nor faster than the slowness or speed of its mover, whereas a composite motion may be infinitely slower or faster than its mover, or else equal to it. Two kinds of motion: simple and composite
Simple motion is bound to the speed of its mover, being neither faster nor slower than it. Composite motion is free of that limit: it can be infinitely slower or faster than the mover, or exactly equal to it. The note lays down a general principle about how motions combine.
