Wheel that locks and unlocks in beats
A note describes a wheel that turns in timed beats and repeatedly engages and disengages, locking and unlocking. This is the escapement or counting action that lets the movement advance step by step.
Galley pump
The tall hatched cylinder at the right is labelled a pump, specified as a galley pump, the suction tube used to draw bilge water from a ship. It stands as a separate device alongside the clock studies.
