The upper mechanism is a press for squeezing wine or oil held in an iron-bound cask. The long beam and the hatched screw-and-frame body show how pressure would be brought down onto the barrel.
Water clock
A second figure is given as a demonstrative scheme for a water clock, a clepsydra that measures time by the steady passage of water. It is drawn as a small explanatory diagram rather than a finished mechanism.
