Balance staffs: arms cut and re-hung as counterweights

The sheet gathers several studies of a suspended balance staff, each arm carrying four units labelled 4. In successive figures a two-unit piece is cut from one arm and hung from the end of the remainder, and further pieces equal to a whole arm are added below—one horizontally, one vertically. The paired staves compare a whole arm (2 and 2 making 4) with one from which a two-unit segment has been cut and re-suspended.
