Setting the loops n and m so both staves camber alike and their cord-triangles stay equilateral.
Two graduated staves are each hung from a pair of cords gathered at a sliding ring, with a ball weight (one marked 1, the other 8) suspended from the middle so that each stave bows, or cambers, between its end points (S and r; v and x). Leonardo sets out to make the camber the same in both arrangements and the cord-triangles identical. He fixes the eyelets n and m so that the spans v-x, v-m and m-x are equal, making the supporting triangles equilateral.

Equal camber under the ball weights 1 and 8
Two graduated staves are hung by cords and loaded at the middle by ball weights, one marked 1 and the other 8, so that each stave bows, or cambers, between its ends (S and r; v and x). Leonardo requires that the camber be equal in both arrangements and that the triangles formed by the cords match one another.
Eyelets n and m give equilateral cord-triangles
The sliding loops n and m are placed so that the span from v to x equals the spans v to m and m to x, making the smaller supporting triangle equilateral. The larger triangle is arranged the same way, so both triangles are equilateral and the two staves behave alike.
