A cloaked, hatted figure surrounded by studies of rods, wheels and a hoist; faint marginal notes
On a sheet of red-prepared paper a standing, bearded figure is drawn in the centre, wearing a broad hat and a cloak whose drapery falls in long folds to the ground, a study for a robed figure. Around it Leonardo has sketched an assortment of mechanical parts: a hinged arm or hoist carrying a wheel at the upper right, a cylindrical roller or drum at the right, and various rods, brackets and fittings at the sides and along the foot of the sheet. A lighter, smaller figure appears at the left. Faint mirror-script notes in the right margin are not transcribed in this edition.

Standing draped figure
The central figure stands frontally in a long cloak that wraps the body and falls in heavy vertical folds, the head bearded and covered by a wide-brimmed hat. The drawing concentrates on the fall of the drapery over the standing pose, in the manner of a study for a robed saint or apostle.
Hoist and wheel at upper right
At the upper right a jointed arm or bracket projects from an upright framework and carries a small wheel or pulley, suggesting a hoisting or lifting mechanism. The parts are drawn in fine line as a separate technical study on the same sheet.
Roller and assorted fittings
A short cylindrical roller or drum is drawn at the right, and further rods, clamps and small mechanical fittings are scattered down the sides and across the lower part of the sheet. They read as a set of loose studies of machine components.
