Red chalk and pen portrait study, with a later identifying inscription
A young woman's head and shoulders are turned three-quarters to the right, a sheer veil drawn back over the hair and falling behind the neck; the face is drawn in red chalk with pen and ink reinforcing the eyes and contours. The paper is heavily foxed and stained, especially across the right cheek. A later hand has added ink inscriptions at the upper left and a larger identifying caption and attribution along the lower margin, none of which is included in the bundle and so is left untranscribed.

Head and shoulders of a young woman
The sitter faces three-quarters to the right, the hair covered by a fine transparent veil that loops behind the ear and down over the shoulder. The features are youthful and rounded, with a slight forward tilt of the head. Only the head, neck and the top of the bodice are worked up.
Soft chalk modelling of the face
Red chalk is rubbed and blended to model the cheeks, brow and throat, with pen and darker ink sharpening the eyes, nostril and lips. The graded shading gives the face a soft, rounded relief typical of a finished portrait head rather than a rapid sketch.
Later inscriptions on the sheet
Untranscribed ink writing in a later hand appears at the upper left corner and, more prominently, as an identifying caption and attribution across the lower margin below a ruled line. This text is not part of the drawing's own content and is not transcribed here.
