Verso: Attribution Notes and Inscribed Cartouche
Old cartouche naming the sitter as Francesco Sforza and crediting Bramantino
The back of the sheet is blank of drawing, carrying only faint pencil cataloguing notes and inventory numbers in the upper area and an inked cartouche along the lower edge. In an old hand, the cartouche identifies the sitter of the recto portrait as Francesco Sforza, Duke of Milan, and attributes the drawing to the Milanese painter and architect known as Bramantino. These inscriptions are collectors' and cataloguers' additions and are paraphrased, not transcribed, here.
