Character studies of aged men, one shouting with an open mouth
Four grotesque head studies numbered 53 to 56 are assembled on this plate. They show a wrinkled man in a cloak, a bald man shouting with a wide-open mouth and thrust-out lower lip, a bearded man in a soft pointed cap, and a man in a banded cap or coiffure drawn as a bust. No autograph text accompanies the drawings; the corner numbers are cataloguing marks.

Wrinkled man in a cloak (no. 53)
A heavily wrinkled man faces left in profile, his brow and cheeks deeply creased. The shoulders are wrapped in a loose cloak.
Bald man shouting (no. 54)
A bald man faces left in profile with his mouth flung wide open and lower lip thrust forward, as if shouting. The forehead and jaw are strongly modelled.
Bearded man in a pointed cap (no. 55)
A man in a soft pointed cap faces left in profile, with a wispy pointed beard and a sharp nose. The features are lightly and delicately drawn.
Man in a banded coiffure, bust (no. 56)
A man with hair or a cap arranged in coiled bands faces right in profile, drawn as a bust with a draped garment. The face is lined and the nose prominent.
