A red-chalk head study of a full-cheeked youth with a great mass of tight curls surrounding the face, the eyes closed or lowered and the head turned slightly to the viewer's right. Below the chin the chalk indicates a decorated collar or gorget about the neck. The upper corners of the sheet are cut, and a small collector's stamp appears at the lower right.

The rounded, youthful face is softly modeled, the eyes shut and the mouth relaxed. A dense halo of curling hair is built up with short, hooked chalk strokes on every side. A band of ornament or armour is sketched around the base of the neck and shoulders.
