Pen Sketch of a Crowd of Figures and Horsemen
A dense, lightly drawn group of standing and mounted figures
A rapid pen-and-ink compositional sketch of a large crowd of figures gathered together. Standing figures cluster in the centre and foreground, some in profile and some turning, while horses and mounted riders appear at the left and right edges of the throng. The drawing is a summary study of a densely populated scene, its figures set down in quick, searching outlines. An old inventory number is written at the upper right and a collection stamp is impressed at the lower right.

Densely massed crowd of figures
A press of standing figures fills the centre and lower part of the sheet, drawn in rapid pen outlines with little interior detail. Heads and shoulders overlap to suggest depth within the crowd, and one figure in the foreground bends sharply forward.
Horses at the edges of the group
Horses and their riders are indicated at the left margin and toward the right side of the crowd, their bodies lightly sketched behind and among the standing figures. They frame the massed group and give the gathering the character of a mounted assembly.
