Finished Study of a Horse's Head in Profile
Carefully modelled head of a horse facing left, with faint sketches beyond
A highly finished study presents the head of a horse in profile, turned to the left with the muzzle open. The forms are carefully modelled with fine hatching, giving weight to the cheek, the alert eye and the crest of the mane. Faint red-chalk sketches drift across the background, and a collector's monogram stamp sits at the lower centre.

Modelled horse's head
The head is drawn in profile to the left, the lips parted to show the teeth and the ear pricked back. Delicate hatching models the planes of the jaw and cheek and the wiry curls of the mane, giving the study a sculptural solidity.
Faint background sketches
Light red-chalk marks appear behind the main head, upper left and lower right, suggesting further tentative studies. They are too faint to identify with any certainty.
