How Rivers Widen and Deepen Their Valleys
Meandering currents undercut the mountains; the cut of Gibraltar lowers the Mediterranean
Two folios of Leonardo's water treatise argue that the sinuous, meandering motion of rivers strikes and consumes the roots of the lateral mountains, so that over time a valley grows in length and depth while narrowing at its floor. A lettered marginal diagram (valley a c k h, river a c e g k) tracks how each bend of the bank migrates downstream in step with the current. A further passage treats the changing of river beds and mouths, and claims that the cutting of Abila and Calpe at the Strait of Gibraltar lowered the surface of the Mediterranean and drained the high channels that once fed the northern rivers. Meanders widen, deepen, and narrow the valley (a c k h; a c e g k)
The meanders a river makes, rebounding from one mountain to the other, make its banks sinuous, and this sinuosity migrates with the current until, over time, it has worked through the whole valley. In the valley a c k h the reach a c wears the opposite bank back to b d, the reach c e back to d f, and e g back to f h; the lighter debris is carried off with the water while the heavier settles at the valley's sides.
The cut of Abila and Calpe lowered the Mediterranean
Leonardo holds that the cutting of Abila and Calpe in the Strait of Gades (Gibraltar) greatly diminished the rivers descending from the Alps to the north. Before that breach the Mediterranean stood so high that it surpassed three quarters of the height of those Alps and penetrated abundantly through the veins of the earth; once the strait opened, the sea sank, the high channels emptied, and the rivers lost the abundance of their flows.
Rivers shift their beds and mouths downstream
The bases of hills bend back following the flight of the river, as if to reclaim the earth it steals from them. The largest rivers, running through the greatest valleys they themselves have cut, continually consume the waves of their banks and carry them downstream, so that the mouths of rivers likewise bend and descend in the direction of the main current, the water taking from the struck bank and giving back on the opposite side where it rebounds.
