The oscillating ("ventilating") motion and its impetus
How a body hung from cords, a balance beam, or a wheel on a cord swings until its impetus dies
Folio 2r opens a treatise on 'moto ventilante,' Leonardo's term for the flexible back-and-forth motion set up in a body that cannot follow the impetus given to it, converting reflected motion into incident and back again until the impetus is spent. A row of five small diagrams and a marginal wheel figure show where such motion appears: a weight on cords, the arms of a balance about its pole, a boat on water, water in a vessel, and wind between walls. He divides the motion into 'straight' (swinging between two directions) and 'revolving' (a cord wound on a mounted wheel that unwinds and rewinds as it falls). The facing folio 13v is blank.

Definition of oscillating motion
The oscillating motion is a flexible motion generated in bodies constrained not to follow the impetus joined to them; now this way, now that, it converts reflected motion into incident and incident into reflected, continuing until the impetus that drives the body is consumed and dies with the body's motion.
Straight and revolving oscillation; the falling wheel on a cord
Oscillating motion appears in a weight on cords, a balance's arms, a boat, water in vessels, wind, and fire in furnaces. It is of two kinds: straight (swinging between two directions such as north-south) and revolving, as when a cord wound on a mounted wheel unwinds as the wheel falls straight down, then by its gained impetus rewinds and climbs back nearly to its start.
